Classroom Management

During the first week of school the students and I talk about our hopes and dreams for the coming year and about our classroom rules.  Each year we decide as a class what rules are important for a safe learning environment.

They typically take shape around these five ideas:

            1. Take care of yourself and keep everybody safe.

            2. Help and respect other people.

            3. Be gentle and take care of all the things in our school.

            4. Try your hardest and do your best work.

            5. Have a positive attitude.

In room 25 we use Class Dojo to keep track of our behavior.

Class Dojo is an amazing, interactive, behavior management system. I have found it to be a great motivational tool for my students.  Class Dojo allows me to track student behavior, both positive and negative, via a computer system, from anywhere in the school.  Students are awarded points for many different classroom and school wide expectations throughout the day, and the system provides instant student feedback.  Points might be earned for following a specific direction, helping out a friend, putting forth a great effort, earning a Wildcat Coupon for using Cool Tools, thinking of an amazing idea and so much more. Students may also earn negative points for inappropriate behaviors, but only after they have been given one reminder to correct it.

At the end of the day students are responsible for copying down their positive point totals onto their behavior log.  This log will come home daily in the O.W.L. folder, so that you can see how they are doing.

The system allows students to reflect on their own behavior using a visual tool that allows them see what areas they are doing well in, and what areas they can improve in.

The system also allows me send daily detailed reports via email, so that students can share their progress. If you are interested in this feature, please send me an email and I’ll set it up.

At the end of the week students that earn a specified number of positive points will earn a choice from behavior incentives. The weekly point totals will vary throughout the year, but all students will know at the beginning of each week how many points they must earn.

Please note that I DO NOT give out candy as a reward.

If you have any questions about this system, please feel free to ask, or visit the Class Dojo website!
